“Why is my electricity bill so high?’ This is a question we’ve seen popping up more and more lately, but not to fear, we have the answers!
Climate in North Queensland
It’s no secret that North Queensland is home to hot sunny days and warm temperatures pretty much all-year-round. So, what does this mean? Well, when the weather is hot outside we love to retreat inside and crank the AC.
Generally, air conditioning accounts for a hefty portion of your electricity bill. In fact, on average air conditioning contributes to more than 50% of the household electricity bill.
That’s not all. With the pandemic causing more people to work from home or staying indoors this means that your air conditioning unit is being used more than it usually would.
Tariff Usage in Queensland
There’s another factor that you should consider when questioning the cost of your electricity bill and that’s tariffs.
What are tariffs exactly? Tariffs are essentially the prices you are charged for the energy that you use. However, tariffs will vary depending on the type of meter you have and your energy distributor.
The most common tariff that is used in North Queensland is tariff 11. Tariff 11 is a general supply tariff where you pay a flat rate for the electricity you use throughout the day and night as well as a supply charge. As of 1st July 2021 you will be charged $0.21760 for all usage per kWh and the supply charge is $0.97239 per day.
Economy tariffs such as tariff 33 or 31 are great options for appliances that don’t require a constant supply of power.
Tariff 33 is mostly used for pool pumps, electric hot water systems that hold 125 litres or more, heat pump systems that hold 270 litres or more as well as solar hot water systems that hold 160 litres or more. For this tariff, power is available for a minimum of 18 hours per day. Though it’s important to consider that the time when power is switched off can change on a daily basis and vary in duration. From 1st July, 2021 all usage per kWh is $0.15744.
On the other hand, tariff 31 is primarily used for electric hot water systems that hold 250 litres or more that are reheated at night. Through this tariff, power is available for a minimum of 8 hours per day. From 1st July 2021, all usage is $0.14329 per kWh.
Energy Saving Options
At Rolly’s Electrical we offer several options that will help you to slash the cost of your electricity bill. Below we explain how we can help.
Solar Power Systems
If you’re looking to slice your bill in half then solar is your best bet! We always recommend solar as an energy option because it’s not only cost-effective but also works to lower your carbon footprint.
But that’s not all! Solar panels are extremely low maintenance as they last up to 35 years. However, they do require cleaning once per year and maintenance servicing every 5 years. But not to fear, we got you sorted with our cleaning and maintenance services. Also, rooftop solar systems can drastically increase the value of your home.
The cost of solar systems can cause some people to pull the reins, but remember that this cost is influenced by brand, durability, quality, and the panel’s capacity. A quality panel will save you plenty in the long run, trust us! Thinking about making the change to solar? Head here to find out more.
