On a normal power circuit, the current flowing to an appliance returns through the neutral wire. If the circuit is compromised, the electricity can leak to earth through a person in contact with the appliance, causing death or serious injury. Installing safety switches saves lives.
A safety switch detects the loss of power from the circuit, and cuts the supply of electricity in as little as 30 milliseconds – 0.003 seconds. Importantly, this response time is faster than the critical section of a heartbeat, and therefore significantly reduces the risk of death or serious injury.
Over 15 Australians are killed annually due to household electricity; many of these accidents could have been prevented by the installation of a safety switch. Ensure your safety switch is in good working order GET IT TESTED!
Q. What is an RCD and how does it work?
An RCD (Residual-Current Device, also called a Safety Switch) is designed to monitor the flow of electricity through a circuit and cut off the electricity supply automatically when a leak is detected from a fault (in the wiring, an appliance or a switch).
The RCD detects when the electric current is not balanced between the energized conductor and the return neutral conductor. The RCD will disconnect the power supply quickly enough to prevent injury from electrocution (usually in under 30 milliseconds).
Q. Are safety switches compulsory in Queensland?
Yes – Safety switches have been compulsory on the power outlet circuits of new homes since the early 1990s, and on the light and power circuits of new homes in most states since 2000. Safety Switches provide a higher level of protection against electrocution or electric shock, and have a proven track record of saving lives.
Q. Are safety switches required in offices and industrial premises?
Yes – All socket outlets not more than 20A and socket outlets used for specified electrical equipment require hard wired RCD protection.
Q. How can Rolly’s Electrical help?
Rolly’s Electrical has an outstanding reputation for providing quality electrical service. With an experienced team servicing the greater Townsville area you can be sure we arrive on time and carry out the work in a professional manner. We can install, supply and test your Safety Switch/RCD.
Remember Safety Switches/RCDs save lives!!
It takes very little time for an electrical shock to kill. Conventional circuit breakers or fuses will only break the circuit when the total current is excessive, by that time the electricity will have caused harm. An RCD will detect very small leakages, before they become potentially life threatening. Is it worth risking a life?
